About Murphys
The town of Murphys was recently identified as one of America’s Top 10 Coolest Small Towns, according to Budget Travel magazine. Like most towns in Calaveras County, Murphys was originally a Goldrush town of the 1850’s, and has been able to maintain its charm. Besides the history, Calaveras County has more geology than any other California county.

From mild to wild, water sports include house boating, flat water or river kayaking and canoeing, high speed boating, jet sking, water skiing, wake boarding and class IV whitewater rafting on the North Fork of the Stanislaus River. Two major rivers and nine public access lakes from large reservoirs to small alpine lakes offer more that 300 miles of scenic shoreline.

Golfers get it in Calaveras County: green oases in the golden countryside; emerald meadows on the forest floor. Calaveras courses are legendary with challenges for every caliber of golfer.

In September 2005 a 61-mile stretch of California’s Highways 4 and 89 was honored as The Ebbetts Pass National Scenic Byway. The high-country road links two state parks – Calaveras Big Trees and Grover Hot Springs – the Carson-Iceberg and Mokelumne National Wilderness areas, the Pacific Crest Trail, Bear Valley and the Stanislaus and Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forests.

Angels Camp, population 3,400, is the only incorporated city in Calaveras County and is home to the famous “Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee:. The third week in May over 400 frogs and 40,000 people who love them come from all over the country for this 5-day event, an annual event since 1928.

Yosemite National park is a one hour drive from Calaveras. Lake Tahoe is a short two drive. Excellent driving on main roads and side roads that wind through the county.
